Documenta, the sprawling contemporary-art exhibition held every five years in Kassel, Germany, has added four more names to the curatorial team assembling its 2027 edition, rounding out what organizers describe as the festival's first entirely female-led artistic leadership.
The composer and installation artist Raven Chacon joins as curator-at-large, while Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal come aboard as curatorial advisers, documenta announced this week. They join the core team artistic director Naomi Beckwith assembled last year — Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodríguez Castro and Xiaoyu Weng — to shape documenta 16's program, publications and public events. The exhibition is scheduled to open June 12, 2027, and run through mid-September in Kassel, the mid-sized German city that has hosted documenta since 1955.
A festival still under scrutiny
The appointments come as documenta continues to work through the fallout of its 2022 edition, which was engulfed in controversy after a large-scale banner on public display was condemned as antisemitic imagery and removed. In the aftermath, the organization adopted a working definition of antisemitism that critics — including artists and free-speech groups — argue effectively equates criticism of Israeli government policy with antisemitism itself, a conflation they say sits uneasily with documenta's stated commitment to artistic freedom.
That tension has not fully subsided. Beckwith has said in press interviews that some artists approached for the 2027 edition have already declined to participate, citing Germany's political and financial support for Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Documenta's organizers have continued to describe the upcoming edition as a space for what they call "study, experimentation, and awakening," language meant to signal openness even as the festival navigates one of the most polarizing debates in the contemporary-art world.
No further curatorial announcements have been scheduled, and documenta has not yet released details of the 2027 edition's artist list or thematic framework. Those are expected over the coming months as the nine-person curatorial team begins its work in earnest.
