India's Gukesh D will defend his world chess championship against Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva starting Nov. 22, in a match FIDE says will be the youngest world championship pairing in the sport's history — both players are 20 years old.

The match runs through Dec. 13 at the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny, with Game 1 on Nov. 24 and up to 14 classical games scheduled. It is the first world championship match held in Switzerland since Vladimir Kramnik defended his title against Peter Leko in Brissago in 2004.

Gukesh became the youngest undisputed world champion in history when he won the title in 2024; Sindarov qualified as challenger through this year's Candidates tournament. Chess officials have pointed to the pairing as evidence of a generational shift at the top of the game, with the sport's traditional power base among players in their 30s and older increasingly challenged by a wave of players who grew up training with engine assistance from early childhood.
