Thousands of California state employees walked off the job Wednesday in a one-day strike as tensions boiled over following months of stalled contract negotiations between their union and Governor Gavin Newsom's administration.
SEIU Local 1000, which represents roughly 100,000 public employees including nurses, teachers and a wide range of other state workers, has been at an impasse with the state since its previous contract expired on June 30. The union is pushing for higher wages, greater telework flexibility and more affordable healthcare coverage, arguing that stagnant pay has made it increasingly difficult for state employees to keep pace with California's high cost of living.
The one-day walkout is often used by public-sector unions as a pressure tactic short of a full, open-ended strike, intended to demonstrate members' willingness to escalate further if negotiations do not progress. State officials have not publicly detailed where talks currently stand or when negotiations are next expected to resume, and it remains unclear whether Wednesday's action will be followed by further job actions if the two sides remain unable to reach an agreement in the coming weeks.
