Milo Yiannopoulos, the British far-right commentator who spent years demanding harsher immigration enforcement, was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday for overstaying his own visa by more than six years, according to a Department of Homeland Security statement confirmed Friday.
Yiannopoulos was detained at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, according to Global News, and is being held pending removal out of ICE's Alexandria, Louisiana field office, which processes deportation flights. He had entered the country legally through New York City in May 2019 but remained well past his authorized stay. An immigration judge issued a final removal order on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for a scheduled hearing.
"He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation's laws," a DHS spokesperson said in a statement announcing the arrest, which referred to Yiannopoulos as an "illegal alien from the United Kingdom" despite his having entered the country through lawful channels seven years ago.
A vocal supporter of the crackdown he now faces
The detention lands with particular irony given Yiannopoulos's own public record. A former Breitbart editor turned independent commentator, he has repeatedly called for stricter immigration limits, once writing on social media:
Zero immigration for the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.

He has also been a vocal supporter of the Trump administration's broader enforcement agenda. Conservative activist Laura Loomer, who has feuded publicly with Yiannopoulos in the past, welcomed his arrest online, citing his own past statements as justification.
Yiannopoulos rose to national prominence in the mid-2010s as a Breitbart editor and self-styled provocateur before Twitter permanently banned him in 2016 over his role in a harassment campaign against actress Leslie Jones. He resigned from Breitbart the following year after video surfaced of him appearing to condone sexual relationships between adults and minors, remarks he later said were taken out of context.
His legal representation and next steps in the removal process were not immediately clear Friday. Under standard ICE procedure, individuals with a final removal order can be deported once travel documents and logistics are arranged, though the timeline varies case by case. The case adds Yiannopoulos, a fixture of the mid-2010s "alt-right" media ecosystem who has largely faded from mainstream visibility since, to the list of high-profile enforcement actions the administration has publicized as it presses its immigration agenda ahead of the midterms.
