Eight teams remain in the Little League World Series after a Monday elimination round in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, that saw Japan survive a scare thanks to a pitcher who also supplied the offense, setting up Tuesday's quarterfinal games in both the U.S. and international brackets.
Japan beat Czechia 3-2 in the day's tightest contest, with Yunosuke Yabe striking out seven batters over the final three innings on the mound while also hitting two home runs to keep his team alive. The other elimination-round results Monday were Canada 3, Panama 2; Great Lakes 6, Southwest 1; and Southeast 6, Mid-Atlantic 5 — all four games decided by margins of one to five runs.
A tournament that has stayed close
The results extend a pattern from the tournament's first week: several of the most closely watched matchups have been decided late. Sunday's slate included Curaçao's 1-0 win over South Korea and Nicaragua's 8-4 victory over Mexico, while the opening weekend saw Asia-Pacific representatives roll to lopsided wins even as other regional qualifiers were eliminated in tighter, single-run games.
The 2026 tournament, run by Little League International, follows its now-standard format of separate U.S. and international brackets that funnel toward the two bracket championship games before their winners meet for the title. With Monday's four elimination games complete, the field has been cut to eight teams beginning Tuesday's quarterfinal play, all still broadcast nationally as part of the tournament's decade-long ESPN partnership.
Williamsport's South Williamsport complex has drawn its usual crowds of families and youth teams for the tournament, which runs through the championship game on August 30. Concession stands, hillside seating beyond the outfield fence and the tournament's giveaway pin-trading culture remain fixtures of the event even as its television audience and sponsorship profile have grown in recent years.
Tuesday's schedule calls for four games on ESPN platforms, starting at 1 p.m. Eastern and running through the evening, pitting the remaining regional and international qualifiers against each other in a single-elimination format. With each bracket now down to four teams apiece, Tuesday's winners move a step closer to Saturday's U.S. and international championship games, whose winners meet in Sunday's title game.
A full schedule and bracket tracker is being updated throughout the week as the tournament narrows toward its title games. The tournament's softball counterpart already concluded earlier this month in Greenville, North Carolina.
