"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" added $145 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, its second in theaters, extending a run that has already rewritten the record books for Sony and Marvel Studios. Only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149.2 million) and "Avengers: Endgame" ($147.3 million) have posted bigger second weekends in North American history.
The film's 10-day domestic total reached $655 million, the highest domestic sum any movie has earned in its first 10 days of release. Worldwide, it has taken in $1.67 billion after 12 days, including $1.01 billion from international markets, making it the second-fastest film ever to cross $1 billion overseas, trailing only "Avengers: Endgame."
International grosses were led by China, which has contributed $186 million so far, along with $87.4 million from the UK and $52.8 million from India — a record for a Hollywood release there.
From record opening to record pace
The film opened July 31 with a domestic weekend of $360 million, the biggest domestic opening in box-office history, surpassing "Avengers: Endgame's" $357.1 million from 2019, on a reported $225 million budget. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers and Justin Kuritzles, the film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo.
Reception has been strong on both sides: a 90% critics' score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes — the highest audience score of any solo Spider-Man film, live-action or animated — alongside an A CinemaScore.
The film is projected to cross $2 billion globally this week and, according to TheWrap, remains on pace to join "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame" as only the third film to pass $2.5 billion. It topped a modest weekend field: "The Odyssey" added $31.5 million domestically for a $1.1 billion worldwide total, while new release "One Night Only" opened to $5.7 million, according to Variety.
