AI Data Center Builder Crusoe Triples Valuation to $30 Billion in New Funding

The $3 billion round, co-led by Atreides Management and Valor Equity Partners with backing from Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, comes as Crusoe explores a near-term IPO and builds out capacity for customers including Microsoft, Meta and OpenAI.

Crusoe, the AI infrastructure company that builds hyperscale data center campuses for Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI and Oracle, has raised more than $3 billion in a new funding round that values the company at $30 billion — triple the $10 billion valuation it carried less than a year ago. The round was co-led by Atreides Management and Valor Equity Partners, with participation from Mubadala Capital, the investment arm of Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, according to Bloomberg and TechCrunch.

From Flared Gas to Hyperscale AI Campuses

Crusoe launched in 2018 as a cryptocurrency-mining operation that used otherwise-flared natural gas to power its computers, before pivoting toward building data centers purpose-built for AI training and inference. That shift has proven lucrative: the company recently signed a five-year, $13 billion cloud contract to supply quantitative trading firm Jane Street with GPU capacity and AI infrastructure, one of the largest such deals struck by a data center operator outside the major cloud providers.

The new round follows a $1.38 billion raise at a $10 billion valuation last October — meaning Crusoe's valuation has tripled in roughly ten months, a pace that reflects investors' continued willingness to fund the physical buildout of AI compute even as questions persist elsewhere about the economics of the AI boom. Crusoe has separately been meeting with investment banks including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to explore a near-term initial public offering, though no formal filing has been made, and the fresh capital gives the company room to keep building out campuses without an immediate market debut.

The size of the round places Crusoe among the best-funded privately held data center developers, alongside better-known cloud-compute names that have similarly raised multibillion-dollar rounds this year as hyperscalers outsource GPU capacity rather than build every campus themselves. Backers such as Mubadala have increasingly treated AI data center equity as a distinct asset class, betting that long-term contracts like the Jane Street deal provide bond-like cash flow even if enthusiasm for individual AI applications cools.

The fundraise underscores a broader pattern in venture capital this year: money continues to flow toward the physical infrastructure layer of AI — data centers, power systems and specialized chips — even as funding for consumer-facing AI applications has grown more selective. Investors backing Crusoe are, in effect, betting on both sides of the AI compute equation: the sheer volume of GPU capacity the industry will need, and the infrastructure required to keep it powered and cooled.
