Volleyball players battle wet conditions at annual coed meet
Usually outdoor volleyball is played in sand or on grass under hot sunny skies, but the sport during Longhorn Days in Altamont saw players battle rain drops during an evening storm that hit the area at Altamont High School's football field. People had to dodge large puddles while walking through parking lots on their way to volleyball play. However, guys and gals from Altamont, Duchesne, Roosevelt, Myton, Altonah, Tabiona, Bridgeland, Mt. Emmons and other Duchesne County towns braved the wet weather as they tried to sign up for volleyball play. Meet officials worked in wet conditions to get the volleyball nets in place. Some had umbrellas in hand, but others stood under trees, used hoods from jackets to shield them from the rain and others such as former Altamont High School volleyball star, Nicole Fisher draped themselves in blankets to keep warm and not get wet. The rain let up and soon players were warming up and getting ready for play. Some worked out on nets placed on the football field with others on the sidelines. One group was so close to a building that they hit the volleyball and it landed on the roof. Luckily it bounced right back to them. Brianna (or Brittney) Nielsen, a Union High School athlete, hit the ball back and forth to a friend while rain drops were making for a wet night of play. Both Nielsens played on Union's second place 3A girls' basketball team this past season. (Duchesne High School's team placed second at the 1A Meet. Richfield won the 3A meet and Piute bagged the 1A hoop crown.) Finally the storm stopped and volleyball competitors were able to take up their favorite sport while being careful on the wet grass.
