Tabiona downs Valley team 49-42

Tabiona was up by one (30-29) after three quarters, but they used a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to take a 49-42 first round win over Valley in the 1A State Tournament on Wednesday in Richfield.

Sophomore center Eddie Dunham blocked shot a Tabiona layup at the buzzer to give Bryce Valley a 36-34 win over the Tigers, Thursday for their first visit to the Final Four of the state meet since 1994. Bryce Valley went on to win the 1A championship. This is the second year in a row that Tabiona played the eventual state title winner in the second round. Last season Tabiona lost to Escalante and the southern Utah team won their third crown.

The Tigers were eliminated from the state meet when they lost to Panguitch, Friday afternoon 61-51. Two Giles' free throws tied up the first quarter at 6-6 and a three by Rhoades knotted the game at 9-9 early in the second. A Giles' field goal had THS ahead 14-13. Free throws by Van Tassell and a two by Rhoades gave THS an 18-13 edge. However, PHS rallied back and was down 20-19 at the half.

Three-pointers by MaKade Christensen, Brooks Leach and Riley Miller gave the Bobcats a commanding lead of 40-31 and they led 43-34 after three quarters. Six points by Giles (field goal and four free throws – first six points of the quarter) helped Tabiona close the gap to three at 43-40. THS got within four at 50-46 with 2:50 left, but an 11-5 run gave PHS a ten-point win. Panguitch hit 7 out of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Giles led THS vs. PHS with 24 and Rhoades added 13. G. Van Tassell tossed in 12 and Kenny Ludwig Fryar two. Tabiona flipped in 16 field goals and hit 17 out of 21 foul pitches. Miller was the top Bobcat at 19. PHS hit 20 field goals and was 18-for-29 in free throws.

Tabiona led Valley 18-8 after one and had a 21-14 halftime edge (Tabiona had only three points in the second quarter). The Tigers fired in 19 field goals and were 10 for 16 at the free throw lane. Valley hit 15 field goals and fired in 9 out of 13 foul pitches.

Robbie Giles led THS with 19 (eight in the fourth quarter) and teammates Gerald Van Tassell (12) and Dane Rhoades (11) ended up in double figures. Lance Maxwell was the best for Valley at 14 points.

Behind the play of G.Van Tassell, Giles and Rhoades, Tabiona sprinted out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter but Valley rallied back in the third quarter. Rhoades pumped in a shot for a 25-19 Tabiona lead and Giles zapped in a shot for a 27-24 Tiger lead. Williams hit a three to tie up the game at 27-27, and then Giles' three-point play had THS ahead 30-27. Maxwell was on target to place his team down by one as the third quarter ended.

Giles netted the first five points of the fourth quarter on a three-point play and a field goal. Then Van Tassell's three put Tabiona in command of the game at 38-31. Rhoades and Myles Potter converted free throws and Giles added a field goal plus a foul pitch for a 45-35 Tiger lead. James Hamilton tossed in Tabiona's final basket and THS cruised to a seven-point triumph.

Also scoring for Tabiona were: Hamilton, 4 and Potter, 3. Clay Williams added 12 counters for Valley.

Tabiona led a low scoring first quarter vs. Bryce Valley 7-5 and the first half ended at a 12-12 tie. The Mustangs outscored the Tigers 14-11 in the third quarter to lead 26-23. Kace Roundy hit a three for an 18-14 edge. Roundy added two more buckets for a 24-17 Bryce Valley lead.

James Hamilton fired in a basket and then Robbie Giles pumped in two shots. He was fouled after his first bucket, but missed the free throw and then rebounded the miss back in for another field goal to bring THS within three after three quarters.

The Mustangs hit a three for a 31-25 edge. Potter zipped in a three and Giles and Rhoades tossed in free throws with just over a minute left to get Tabiona within one at 33-32. Roundy pumped in two foul pitches for a 35-32 Bryce Valley edge. However, Rhoades rebounded in a Tiger miss to narrow the Mustang advantage to one at 35-34 with 13 seconds to go.

Bryce Valley hit one out of two free throws to go up by two at 36-34, and won the game when a Tiger layup at the buzzer was blocked and no foul was called.

Giles led the Tigers with 16 points and had 20 rebounds. Also scoring for THS were: Dane Rhoades, Myles Potter, 7; James Hamilton, Gerald Van Tassell, 2. Roundy led Bryce Valley at 24. Tabiona hit 12 field goals and tossed in 9 out of 17 free throws. Bryce Valley zapped in 12 field goals and popped in 8 out of 14 foul pitches.
