Shop with a Cop sets new record
The fifth annual Shop with a Cop event in Roosevelt set a record on Saturday for the number of children that were served. Lt. Ben Lemmon of the Roosevelt Police Department, who coordinates the program, said 65 volunteers assisted 98 children in need with their Christmas shopping. Volunteers and children shared breakfast at McDonald's in Roosevelt about 7 a.m. and then headed to Alco Discount Store in waves. While there, the volunteers spent about $125 on each child, picking out toys and clothes for the children and their family members. The money was provided through community donations. Volunteers represented numerous public agencies, including Roosevelt Police Department, Roosevelt Fire Department, Duchesne County Sheriff's Office, Duchesne County Jail, Division of Wildlife Resources, Utah Highway Patrol, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Utah Probation and Parole, Utah Department of Workforce Services, Utah Division of Child and Family Services, the Family Support Center and others. Uintah Basin Medical Center's Emergency Medical Services also supplied volunteers. Lemmon said the police officers and other volunteers gain as much from the experience as the kids. “Those who didn't have the Christmas spirit prior to today certainly have it now,” he said.
