Eagles clobber defending champion, Escalante
It was billed as the “Rematch of the 2009 1-A State Championship,” but it was a mismatch as Duchesne pounded defending title winner, Escalante 63-41 on Saturday in Duchesne. (DHS placed second to Escalante this past March.) The Eagles pulled off another lopsided win on Friday when they bombed Dugway, 59-14. The first half was almost a shutout. Dugway's Sammy Peterson fired in a 3-pointer for the Mustangs' only counters in the first half with 2:41 to go in the second quarter. Duchesne's Lady Eagles toppled Manti in an away game on Saturday 60-37. Shiaba Allen hit the first bucket of the game and Devan Jones zapped in a basket for a 4-0 edge. Shad Thomas, Jacob Verde and Allen fired in free throws for an 8-0 lead. Allen stole the ball and scored. Verde hit back-to-back field goals for a 14-0 lead. Jones stole the ball and hit a layup to shutout Dugway in the first quarter, 16-0. DHS continued to pile up the points with Kade Beck, Kanaan Nealley and Braiden Despain (hit two field goals) zapping in two-pointers for a 24-0 edge. Dugway knocked out the zero with Peterson's 3-pointer, but Duchesne wasn't done. Alex Remund, Despain and Taylor Rowley found the range for baskets to enable DHS to lead 30-3 at the half. Sophomore Macoy Young showed off his power with three hoops and Beck fired in a 3-pointer. Young hit two free throws and Grant Marett popped in a shot for a 43-3 advantage. Dugway's Kyle Sipsas produced the Mustangs' second basket of the game to make the score after three quarters, DHS 43, Dugway 5.
