DHS Eagles beat ICS and Valley at 1A State Meet
The Duchesne Eagles recovered from a first round loss to place eighth at the 1A Boys State Basketball Tournament when they lost to Whitehorse 60-49, Saturday. WHS pocketed sixth and the consolation championship. Last year the Raiders lost to Tabiona in the clash for fifth and placed seventh. Duchesne couldn't hit free throws when they needed them (8-for-16) and Monticello (22-for-31) did well at the foul line to edge the Eagles 51-46 in the first round of the 1A State Meet at Richfield on Wednesday. Duchesne recovered on Thursday by defeating Intermountain Christian School 59-46 and Manila beat West Ridge 64-52. The Eagles reached the consolation title game by downing Valley 45-34. Earlier in the meet Tabiona beat Valley. Monticello grabbed a 16-9 lead in the first quarter and led 28-19 at the half. The Bucks led 39-30 after three and won by five. The Buckaroos were outscored in the fourth quarter by DHS 12-11. DHS hit 17 field goals and Monticello had 13. Duchesne's Shiaba Allen and Shad Thomas scored buckets and Kanaan Nealley added a free throw to get DHS within three at 43-40. Thomas tossed in a three to close the gap to two at 45-43 with 3:30 left in the game. Allen zipped in a two to place Duchesne down by one at 47-46 with 1:50 to go. The Bucks added a free throw for a 48-46 lead. Thomas missed the front end of a one-and-one situation in an opportunity to tie up the game. Monticello hit 4 out of 5 free throws in the final minute to win by five at 51-46. Both Verde and Burt fouled out of the game for Duchesne. Shad Thomas netted 12 points to lead Duchesne, and Shiaba Allen added 10 counters. He had 10 rebounds. Also scoring for DHS were: Devan Jones, 9; Marty Burt, 7; Macoy Young, 5; Jacob Verde, 2; Nealley, 1.Dallin Duncan led Monticello at 18 points and 16 rebounds. DHS led ICS 12-8 after one and had a 24-17 edge at the half. A16-11 third quarter had Duchesne up 40-28, and the Eagles won by 13. A three-point play by Despain had DHS ahead 40-24 late in the third quarter. Christiansen hit two threes for Intermountain Christian and Alex Remund zipped in a three for Duchesne. DHS went on to win by 13. DHS popped in 16 field goals and was 25-for-35 from the foul line. ICS pumped in 15 field goals and hit 9 out of 15 free throws. Burt was the best Eagle at 15 points and Jones added 10. Also scoring for DHS were: Thomas, 9; Despain, 7; Verde, 6; Young, 5; Remund, 3; Allen, Taylor Rowley, 2. Broc Christiansen had 13 points for ICS. Duchesne was hot from the start vs. Valley on a 6-0 beginning on threes by Thomas and Verde (never hit another three in the game). Valley grabbed a 7-6 lead, but a two by Burt had DHS ahead 8-7. Duchesne led 12-7 after one quarter and was up 24-13 at the half with Despain adding two buckets. The Eagles led 32-20 after three quarters. Valley dug themselves out of a deep hole to be only down three at 37-34 on two Williams' free throws. However, DHS went on an 8-0 run to win by 11 counters. The highlight of the run was a wild don't-watch-the-hoop as it bounces in by Young. Thomas was the best Eagle at 14 and Despain netted 12. Also scoring for DHS were: Burt, 9;Young, Verde, 3; Remund, Jones, 2. Duchesne zapped in 11 field goals and was 21-for-37 at the foul line. Valley dropped in 11 field goals and was 11 out of 14 at the free throw lane. Whitehorse led 14-12 after one, but DHS outscored them 21-13 for a 33-27 halftime edge. WHS tossed in 16 points in the third and held DHS to just seven to go up 43-40. WHS went on to win by 11 counters. Thomas was the top Eagle at 14 and Despain added 10. Jones and Verde tossed in seven and Burt five. DHS fired in 17 field goals and was 14-for-20 in free throws. Shawn Dickson was on the hot at the hoop with 30. His team put in 20 field goals and hit 12 out of 20 free throws.
