Tabiona topples '09 state champ
Tabiona bombed 2009 1-A state champion, Escalante 73-44 on Friday and then the next day edged St. Joseph in overtime 50-42. Gerald Van Tassell put the game into overtime when he hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation. THS outscored St. Joseph 8-0 in overtime to win the game. THS led 16-10 after one and added 12 more to lead 28-20 at the half. A 12-4 third quarter allowed St. Joseph to tie up the game at 32-32. Both teams scored 10 points in the fourth for a 42-42 tie. G. Van Tassell was tops for Tabiona with 21 points and Dane Rhoades added 19. Also scoring were: Robbie Giles, 6 and Myles Potter, 4. THS hit 19 field goals and popped in 6 out of 12 free throws. Tabiona lead Escalante, 18-9 after one and used 19 points in the second quarter for a 37-17 halftime edge. THS added 20 more points for a 57-30 third quarter lead and won by a ton. Rhoades and Van Tassell scored a combined 47 counters with Rhoades hitting 24 and Van Tassell 23. Both hit three 3-pointers. Giles scored 19. Potter added three, and Kenny Fryar-Ludwig and Hamilton scored two counters. THS hit 22 out of 43 field goals and was 23 for 30 at the foul line.
