Union Lady Cougars edge Carbon Dinos hoop team
Union's girls grabbed a 62-55 win over Carbon, and the Male Cats dished out 11 three-pointers in a 77-69 loss to the Dinos on Tuesday in Price. The Lady Cats improve to 15-1. Union will host American Leadership Academy on Tuesday. The Lady Cats led 14-10 after one quarter and had a 31-25 edge at halftime. Carbon outscored Union 17-13 in the third quarter to narrow the Cat lead to two at 44-42. Union pumped in 18 points and held Carbon to 13 to win by seven. Meadow Simkins was the top Cat at 15. Katie Richens and Sarah John added 11. Also scoring were: Majen Mansfield, 8; Brianna Nielsen, 7; Alexis Benson, 6 and Brittney Nielsen, 4. Union pumped in 14 field goals and was 32-for-48 from the foul line. Benson and Richens hit three-pointers. Tia Pappas led Carbon at 17. Mariah Pollock and Kristen Jewkes added eight. Pappas zipped in two threes. CHS tossed in 17 field goals and hit 17 out of 33 free throws. Carbon led Union's boys 20-14 after one and 43-29 at the half. Union outscored CHS 21-15 in the third to drop the Dino lead to eight at 58-50, but Carbon won by the same amount. Jacobson was the best Cat at 19 points that included five threes. Brandon Lamb added 13. Also scoring for Union were: Braxten Nielsen (two threes),8; Paul Nelson, 6; Spencer Ross,Weston Crozier, 5; Daniel Potter, Colton Nielsen, 4; Dillon Murray, 3; Chris Guinn, 2. Crozier, Lamb, Ross and Murray also had threes. Finkbiner led Carbon with 26. He hit five threes and Peczuh added 12 points (had four threes). Carbon had nine threes. The two teams combined for 20 threes. CHS zipped in 25 field goals and was 18-for-31 from the foul line.
