IDs required to stop fraud
Dear Editor, This letter is in response to Richard Jenks Jr.’s letter to the editor about tribal leaders changing the rules. This council isn’t changing any rules, nor are we trying to fix the election. Our people know who they want to vote for, and want to keep the tribal government made up of people whom they can trust and keep all business above board. I don’t think they ever want to go back to the way it was before we came in or vote for someone who misinterprets and misinforms our people. Requiring IDs is one way to identify our tribal members. Along with the IDs, a membership roll will be used as it always has. No eligible tribal voter will be kept from voting. Computers were used in the last election to ensure that no one votes twice. They will be used again in this election. The primary elections isn’t on April 6, that date is set aside for the Candidate's Night. The primary elections is set for April 15. The General Election is set for April 22.

Why can't the tribe lock themselves in a room and work out their issues like adults instead of week after week attacking each other and their internal problems in the newspaper. They might as well change the name of the paper to the "Ute Tribe Standard".
HMMM.. i think the Uintah Basin Standard is called a newpaper for a reason, if you don't like it don't read it. It's as easy as that i'm from the Northern Ute Tribe, However; do not live in the basin I do appreciate the news that is offered from the Uintah Basin Standard; this issue you have with shared news sound more childish then what they bring up each week.
That was a childish comment and I apologize for that. It wasn't a fair assessment of the Standard. I too, do not live in the basin and appreciate the news that is delivered. Being so far away I rely on the Standard to help me feel like I am still home. But as I read the Standard week by week it does seem that the Tribe uses it to bicker back and forth and make accusations. That too is just as childish. Yes there is this thing called freedom of speech but at some point the same thing over and over is turned to deaf ears and I don't think anybody really knows what to believe anymore. I am sorry to admit it but most of the time now I do not read their bickering or just skim past it. I do hope that at some point the Tribe can work together instead of a nation divided. Great things could come of it and that is something that would be worth reading.
You are exactly right mykidsmom, there are a lot of lies and part truths that come through the letters to the Editor about the Tribe and its leaders. There are some tribal members who use the Standard because the Tribal Newspaper Editor is bias and refuses to print contraversial things in the Tribes Newspaper. But maybe that's not a good enough excuse for you, but we really have no other choice. Bascially there is no justice on the reservations. Most corrupt Tribal Leaders are almost never prosecuted, and never revealed to the public. So we use the letters to the Editor to reveal to the Tribal pulic and non-tribal what is going on. But be careful what you read, just in case you consider reading the letters/articles about the Tribe.
I agree with all comments on here. The paper is used to bicker, The Ute Bulletin is bias, But i feel too that the U.B.S is too at times, Depending on who is running it. Geofff seems better at it then Lezlie Whiting.
The tribal membership is divided and that is sad.
