Cougar hoop teams win four contests at Union

Union High School Lady Cats improved to a 10-0 record by defeating South Summit, 56-28; Stansbury 61-37 and Grantsville 64-32 last week. The Union boys downed Manti 49-41 in Roosevelt on Saturday for their fourth win.

Stansbury took a 7-4 edge late in the first quarter, but Union outscored the team from the Tooele area 24-1 to take a 28-10 lead at the half. Stansbury scored its only basket on a successful shot by Hannah Allred with 3.4 seconds left in the second quarter.

Sarah John, Richens, Nielsen and Alexis Benson (hit back-to-back hoops) fired in second quarter baskets for the Cats. Union went on to win by 24 counters.

Nielsen led Union with 15 and John added 11. Benson had 8 counters. Also scoring were: Mansfield, Simkins, Richens, 4; Prevedel, 3; Muir, 2. Robbins led SHS with 17.

Union's Lady Cats led Grantsville 16-12 after one quarter and pumped in 23 points as compared to nine by the Cowboys to lead 39-21 at the half. Union had a 56-25 lead (17 UHS points, four GHS counters) after three and won by a ton.

Katie Richens was tops for Union at 20 and Benson added 14. Also scoring were: John, 10; Nielsen, 8; Simkins, 6; Simkins, 4; Perissa John, 2.

Uintah's girls beat Grantsville 54-50 on Friday. W. Johnson led Uintah with 23 points and Hodgkinson had 10 with Labrum adding 9.

The South Summit and Union were locked in a defensive battle with the score tied at 8-8 after one quarter of play. However, Union outscored the Wildcats 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 29-16 lead at the half. Union pumped in 14 counters in the third quarter for a 43-22 edge and added 13 more to win by 28 counters.

Brianna Nielsen and Katie Richens led the Cats with 14 points each. Also scoring for Union were: Benson, Mansfield, Simkins, 6; P. John, Van Dyke, 2. Union's Nielsen hit two 3-pointers. The Cats fired in 23 field goals and hit 8 of 10 free throws.

Hatch was the best for the Wildcats at 10 and Peterson added 8. Both players hit one 3-pointer each. South Summit pumped in 11 field goals and was 4 for 8 at the foul line.

Union will host Evanston on Tuesday and North Summit on Dec. 29. Union will face Altamont in Altamont on Jan. 9.

The Union boys led Manti 15-8 after one quarter and had a 25-19 edge at the half. Union outscored MHS 12-5 in the third quarter for a 37-24 lead and won by eight counters. Union hit 14 field goals and was 18 for 25 at the foul line.

Braxten Nielsen was the best Cat at 19 counters and Paul Nelson added 10. Also scoring were: Lamb, Guinn, 5; Colton Jacobson, 4; Dylan Braithwaite, 3; Kaden Kulland, 2; Weston Crozier, 1. Nelson had 10 rebounds.

The Male Cats lost to Green River on Friday in Wyoming 70-56. Green River led 33-26 at the half.

Nielsen led Union with 16 and Braithwaite added 15. Also scoring were: Lamb, 7; Nelson, 6; Guinn, Jacobson, 4; Potter, Crozier, 2.

Uintah's boys beat Cheyenne Central 45-39. Ewell led the Utes with 18 and Bullock scored 13.
