Uintah High School Ute graduate wrestles for Iowa
Phillip Keddy, a Uintah High School graduate, after placing fourth the NCAA Championships last year is back for his senior season at the University of Iowa – the defending NCAA champion. Iowa has won back-to-back NCAA titles in 2008 and 2009. Keddy pocketed sixth place as a sophomore. Keddy is a two-time All-American and three-time Big Ten place winner (2nd-2009, 3rd-2008, 7th-2007). He also has 63 career dual starts and is 15-6 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa. 2008-09 – All-American, placing fourth at 184 pounds at NCAA Championships... runner-up at Big Ten Championships... posted a 34-5 collegiate season record, going 35-5 overall... went 23-1 in dual competition and 7-1 in Big Ten duals... scored 94 team points in dual competition, which ranked second on team... led team with eight major decisions, ranked second in collegiate wins (34), collegiate winning percentage (.872), dual wins (23), third in dual winning percentage (.958) and fifth in pins (5)... posted the fourth-fastest pin on the team (1:10)... three of his five losses were to NCAA and Big Ten champion Jake Herbert of Northwestern... the other two were to Rider's Doug Umbehauer... won a 3-2 decision over Harvard's Louis Caputo at NWCA All-Star Dual... earned team All-America award... letterwinner. 2007-08 – Keddy was named an All-American after taking sixth at 184 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He was a third place winner at the Big Ten Championships and had a collegiate record of 28-11 and went 16-5 in dual meets. He was 6-2 in Big Ten duals and scored 62 team points. He was 2-0 at the 197 pound class. He went 5-1 at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and placed fourth at the Midlands Championships. He won the Kaufman-Brand Open title while wrestling unattached. His fastest fall of 1:07 ranked fourth on team. He earned a team All-American award and was a letterwinner. He won 84 kg challenge tournament at FILA University Freestyle World Team Trials. 2006-07 – Keddy placed seventh at the Big Ten Championships and had a season record of 14-17 plus was 14-16 in collegiate matches at 184 pounds. He went 8-10 in duals and 2-5 in Big Ten duals. He scored 33 team points in dual competition and recorded a 48-second pin, which was the third-fastest time on the squad. He placed second at the Kaufman-Brand Open and also competed at the Midlands Championships. He was a letterwinner. 2005-06 – redshirted... posted a 4-2 record at 184 pounds while competing unattached... placed fifth at UNI Open. High School – Keddy was a two-time state champion at Uintah in Vernal, and posted a career record of 146-28 with 84 pins. He was a three-time all-state selection plus two-time team captain and MVP. He led his team with most takedowns in three seasons, most wins twice and most reversals once. He was a 171-pound runner-up at the 2005 Senior Nationals, and was a three time All-American. He lettered three years in football, and was a National Honor Society member. His wrestling coach was Gregg Stensgard. He is the son of Clayton and Lanette Keddy. Keddy is a health and sports studies major. Another Utah wrestler on the Iowa team is Luke Lofthouse from Mountain Crest. He posted a overall mark last season of 4-2. He won the Duhawk Open while wrestling unattached. Lofthouse was a letterwinner. Iowa went 24-0 and won its second straight NCAA team championship. Iowa also won the Big Ten crown. Some of their dual meet wins were over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State, Penn State, Indiana and Northwestern. They also beat archrival Iowa State 20-15. In a non-conference bout they beat Wyoming, 38-3. Iowa averaged 8,008 fans per dual and 56,057 overall this past year for the top attendance mark in the nation. Iowa State was second at 3,016 per match and 21,114 overall. Iowa's best match total was 15,955 for the bout with Iowa State, which is also the all-time record.
