Wide array of items on today's ballots

Tuesday, Nov. 3, is election day in Duchesne County and across the nation. Voters are reminded to bring government-issued identification to their designated polling places.

“Everyone is to show government-issued photo ID, it's a new state law,” said Teresa Baker, a deputy clerk auditor for Duchesne County.

Such forms of ID can include a state-issued driver's license, military ID, passport or concealed-weapons permit.

The recorders for each municipality in the county are presiding over this election. Duchesne County provided training for poll workers. Results will be tabulated by the municipalities, not the county.

The apparent election highlight -- the issue that has generated the most debate -- is the Duchesne County School District's plan to raise $49 million through a bond issue and property tax increase to build three new schools.

The money from the bond issue would be combined with another $20 million for an overall $69 million building plan. A new campus for Union High would cost $40 million, while Altamont High would get a new $18 million building. A second elementary school in Roosevelt to complement East Elementary would carry a price tag of $11 million.

If approved, a tax increase of $65 annually on a $113,000 home would start in 2014. If the new bond issue doesn't pass, taxes would go down $103 between now and 2021, when the existing bond is paid off.

Throughout the county, several races have candidates that are uncontested. They are: Altamont Council, Todd Anfinson; Tabiona Council, Scott Stewart and Rick Wilberg; Tabiona Mayor, Ronnie Giles; Roosevelt Mayor, Vaun Ryan.

Here is a list of the major contested races:

• Altamont mayor: Kim Thacker and Clyde Watkins.

• Duchesne City Council (two seats): Rodney Rowley, Terry Stephenson, Dr. Paul L. Tanner and Carol Thomas.

• Duchesne mayor: Clint Park and RoJean Rowley.

• Myton mayor: Kathleen Cooper and Adrian David Vanos.

• Myton City Council (two seats): Wendy Chase, Larry Dye, Wayne Gingell and James Harmston.

• Roosevelt City Council (two seats): Phillip Armstrong, David Labrum, Rachel Morgan and Lane Yack.

There also will be races involving various special-service districts throughout the county.

Duchesne County polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Polling places include the Altamont Fire Station, Duchesne City Hall, Fruitland Fire Station, Myton City Hall, Neola Fire Station, Crossroads Senior Center (all Roosevelt precincts) and Tabiona Town Hall.

Baker said those who are not registered to vote, but who still reside in the county, may go to the polling locations and fill out a “provisional ballot.” But they must show extra information, such as a utility bill or a renter's agreement, that establishes their residence in the county, along with photo ID.

Those provisional ballots will be counted if the information provided to the poll workers is deemed valid, thus qualifying the voter for the election.

“If you just registered yesterday, or you did not register, you can still fill out a provisional ballot. If you have the evidence that you live in the county, we want you to vote and have your say,” Baker said.
